Solvent is an important component in gravure ink and flexible letterpress ink, and it is also an indispensable material in plastic film composite adhesives. It has the ability to dissolve substances and itself, and its evaporation rate is a crucial factor that determines the drying condition of evaporative inks and affects printing quality. Therefore, the selection and use of solvents are very important, and a comprehensive understanding of the solvents used is necessary.
Function of Solvent
The ability to dissolve resin; organic solvents dissolve resins or additives, making the ink a uniform liquid with fluidity, and can disperse pigments, which helps the ink transfer from the plate to the printed material during printing, and also aids in the adhesion of the ink to the printed material.
Provides moisture and dispersibility to colors, has good stability for the ink, and does not adversely affect the hue changes, coloring power, printing, color distribution, sedimentation, and coagulation of colors.
The ability to adjust viscosity; organic solvents are low-viscosity liquids, and when added to the ink, they can reduce its viscosity. Therefore, the optimal viscosity value can be adjusted according to the printing speed and the depth of the plate to achieve the best results.
The ability to adjust drying speed; in gravure printing, the drying speed of the ink can be adjusted according to printing speed, drying capacity, climatic conditions, and the size of the pattern to meet ideal requirements. Generally, standard solvents can be used for adjustment. However, due to varying conditions, sometimes it is necessary to use fast-drying or slow-drying solvents to meet requirements. The main characteristic of diluents is their ability to adjust drying speed and dissolve resin.
Enhances the ink's wettability to the printed material; the surface of the printed film is also very difficult to wet with gravure ink, hindering ink transfer and damaging printing effects, resulting in poor printing fastness. If an organic solvent with a surface tension close to that of the printed material is used, it can improve the ink's wettability to its surface, helping to overcome the aforementioned drawbacks.
The ability to dissolve or penetrate the printed material; substances like polyvinyl chloride that can dissolve in organic solvents can improve adhesion due to the solvent in the ink dissolving part of its surface, resulting in good printing fastness. Even for films that cannot be dissolved, such as ethylene, polypropylene, and polyester, the solvent's expansion and affinity with the solvent can increase adhesion. Therefore, when manufacturing ink, if the designed solvent has no affinity for the film, excellent printing fastness cannot be achieved.
In printing operations, regarding labor hygiene, great care must be taken regarding the odors emitted by residual solvents, fire hazards caused by flash points, toxicity, etc. Relevant regulations on exhaust emissions should also be followed.
